Meeting on the future treatment of SF waste

Wednesday, April 20, 2011 – Approx. 10:00am

San Francisco City Hall
1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, Room 250

Public hearing to determine the future of San Francisco’s landfill plans will be on Wednesday, April 20 at 10am, at the Board of Supervisors’ Budget and Finance Committee meeting at City Hall. The Department of the Environment engaged in a multi-year, public bid process – at the end of which they determined that Recology’s innovative bid to transport our city’s garbage by rail was more than $100 million less expensive for ratepayers than was Texas-based Waste Management’s bid to continue trucking our city’s landfill to Altamont Pass. The Department of the Environment recommended that Recology be awarded the contract. The Board of Supervisors first reviewed this contract in February, and chose to delay a decision until next week.

Please attend if you would like to voice your opinions on the matter.

Lily Street Block Sale

They say thirteen is an unlucky number, but we hope to prove that wrong this year. April 30, 2011, marks the 13th Annual Lily Street Block Sale! It’s a great time to get together, finalize some spring cleaning, pick up bargains, and help raise funds for the PTA at John Muir Elementary.

Lily Street dead ends at the John Muir schoolyard wall, and from that point down to Franklin Street, neighbors on those four blocks (and adjoining streets) will offer thousands of items for sale at dozens of addresses. A portion of the proceeds will go to the John Muir PTA. For those not participating directly in the sale, saleable items may be donated, and 100% of the proceeds from those items will go to the PTA for their work supporting John Muir.

The sale will include a HUGE amount of kitchen items, furniture, art, clothing, sports equipment, bicycles and parts, antiques, books and much,
much more.

There will be a community BBQ accompanying the sale near the corner of Lily and Buchanan, and more activities will be planned as we get closer to the event.

Show to benefit youth summer programs

Mo’ MAGIC fundraiser to help support their summer youth programs:

Mo’ MAGIC is organizing another magical summer for the children and youth in the Western Addition. In our dedication to combating summer learning loss, we have coordinated activities, field trips and enrichment for hundreds of children and youth in the community.

We are pleased to announce our newest project – The MAGIC Show. It is a fundraiser that is critical to our summer learning initiatives. On April 25, 2011 we will have a reception and program highlighting Mo’ MAGIC and the Summer of MAGIC, with performances by Pop Lyfe and recognition of community leaders such as Fillmore legend Leroy King, volunteer extraordinaire Richard Johnson and Western Addition Beacon Director Takija Gardner.

The suggested donation for the MAGIC show is $75 ($50 for Western Addition residents and service providers and $20 for youth), but any donation is appreciated. Please consider making a donation and joining us for a night of MAGIC on April 25, 6:00pm at Yoshi’s San Francisco. Visit The MAGIC Show donation page here to get tickets. Donate Now!

Mo’ MAGIC is collaboration of organizations and community members working together to create opportunities for youth to grow and learn. Currently we host weekly enrichment opportunities for more than 400 neighborhood children and youth and a weekly mentoring series for 100 youth. We hire enrichment teachers for 10 organizations serving 250 youth and distribute 1500 backpacks filled with school supplies EACH YEAR.

We need to raise $50,000 for this summer’s events and activities to cover the following costs:
• 8 literacy workshops for 450 children and youth
• 8 mentoring workshops for 150 youth
• 5 field trips for 500 children and youth
• 3 enrichment teachers for 300 children and youth
• 4 community events for 500 children youth and their families
• Buy 3000 books for neighborhood programs and housing developments
• Annual health fair and backpack giveaway for more than 1500 children, youth and their families

Every tax deductible donation, not matter how small, will make a difference and is crucial to the support of this community programming. If you can’t donate money, please donate time and volunteer. To make a donation visit our home page www.momagic.org and click the donate now button or you can send checks (made out to our fiscal sponsor AAACC):

Join the Youth Commission

APPLY TO JOIN THE YOUTH COMMISSION!
Applications for the 2011-2012 term of the Youth Commission are now available!

The Youth Commission is a body of 17 San Franciscans, between the ages of 12-23, who serve as liaisons between the local government and the city’s youth community. The commission advises the Board of Supervisors and the Mayor on public policies that directly affect City youth. The Youth Commission historically has played an integral role in assisting political decision-making in City Hall, and is one of the most effective ways for young people to ensure their voices are heard.

The Youth Commission only works well with exceptional commissioners; therefore, individuals between the ages of 12-23 who seek to make a difference in San Francisco are strongly encouraged to apply. The application is available at: www.sfgov.org/yc It is due Friday, April 22, 2011 at 6 p.m.

Download the application and either email it to youthcom@sfgov.org, fax it to (415) 554-6140, or drop it off at the office of the Youth Commission. For further questions, the Youth Commission can be contacted at (415) 554-6446.

Community Meeting On Safeway And Recycling Center

Scott Wiener (D8) will be co-hosting a meeting with Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association and Duboce Triangle Neighborhood Association to discuss the state of the Safeway property at Church and Market, including the recycling center. This area is a hub in the neighborhood and provides valuable services to the community.  In addition, over the years, some have expressed concern about behavior issues in the area.  This meeting will be a good opportunity to discuss all of these issues.  We’ll have representatives from SFPD’s Northern Station, the Department of the Environment, Safeway, and Community Recyclers.

Please join us April 11th, 7:15pm at the Davies Medical Center, Level B, Duboce Avenue & Castro Street, San Francisco, CA 94114
