Volunteer to build haunted houses

Halloween is only a few weeks away and there are two groups who are in need of volunteers to build their haunted houses (lots of muscle & height), dress up & be a prop, story tell, and be a chaperon for day of event. Your gift of time will assure a safe, fun and memorable Halloween event for Western Addition youth and their families.

The first group in need of volunteers, to build their Haunted House, is the CA Public Utilities Commission. This is their 14th year of playing host, providing candy, balloon art, face painting, story telling, Dias Los Muertes Celebration, games and providing costumes to over 700 elementary kids annually. Their continued dedication truly embodies the spirit of community give back. In the past, CA PUC workers were able to get volunteer time off to build the house. Due to budget cuts that is a thing of the past, it is now time for community members to step up and fill this void. Your give back of time and energy will assure a memorable day for over 790 school children from John Muir, Rosa Parks, Tenderloin & Robert Louis Stevenson elementary schools.

To volunteer contact Wendy, coordinator haunted house, at wendy.al-Mukdad@cpuc.ca.gov or 703-2311.
Ten volunteers daily to assemble structure, lots of muscle & height, are needed Monday October 24th from 10 am till 5 pm thru Wednesday October 26th.
Ten volunteers needed to set up props/display area on Thursday October 27th from 10am till 5 pm.
Ten volunteers needed Friday October 28th, day of event, from 8:30 am till 1 pm either get dressed &made up to be a prop or simply greet kids as they enter the haunted house.
All volunteers report to CA PUC courtyard located at 505 Van Ness.
To volunteer Friday October 28th, day of event, from 8:30 am till 2 pm to dress up & story tell, be a crowd flow monitor and hand out candy please contact Victor at vds@cpuc.ca.gov or 703-2992.

The second group in need of volunteers is the Western Addition Beacon Center. This is their fifth year to provide a haunted house, food, fun, games, costume contest and bouncy house for all the Western Addition community to enjoy. Marco, coordinator, is in need of volunteers to help build haunted house, chaperon day of event, set up, work at booths, serve food and clean up.
· 10 volunteers are needed daily at John Muir Elementary Auditorium located at 380 Webster to build the haunted house. The start date is Wednesday October 26th, from 4pm till 6 pm, and will continue thru Friday October 28th.
· 15 volunteers are needed Saturday October 28th, day of event, to set up, serve food, chaperon, work a booth and clean up.
· To volunteer please contact Marco at either mdiaz@ymcasf.org or 749-2715.

Thanks for reading this lengthy request and please make time to give back. Your gift of time & energy is a simple way to invest in our youth to assure they have a safe, fun and memorable day.

Thanks

Hayes Valley Farm Announces First Harvest Festival

October 16 will be a Day to Celebrate Abundance and Heritage

Its time for the very first Hayes Valley Farm Harvest Festival. Join us for fun under the Harvest Sun, with youth activities, tours, special musical guests DJ Lamont and Tyler Matthew Smith, and of course pumpkins! Harvest Festival will begin Sunday, October 16th at 1:00 pm and continue until 5:00 pm.

Enjoy food crafting at the earth oven, special nature awareness workshops, arts and crafts for all ages, a handmade musical instrument factory, face-painting and a honey sale from our hardworking urban bees. This is a family-friendly day that will honor our land, celebrate our diverse web of community and feature locally-grown foods that nourish our spirit and inspire us to grow it local!

The farm has enjoyed a robust growing season, and will host skill shares on making kale chips, simple homemade breads, and fresh-creamed butter. Farmers will give tours throughout the day, and volunteers are encouraged to show up for the regular flipping of compost and planting that takes place every Sunday on Mulch Mountain in the heart of the farm.

Cultures all over the world celebrate the harvest to welcome the colorful new season and give thanks to the transition of abundance. In India, communities gather to dance and give thanks by lighting a bonfire and offering gifts of popcorn, peanuts and sweets. Jews build a sukkah from natural elements and decorate it with fruits and wheat. Hayes Valley Farm invites friends and neighbors young and old, to enjoy a mix of diverse traditions at the farm on Sunday, October 16. Bring your friends and family!
