Good Neighbor Story
Dear Chris Sullivan,
Thanks for your aid in removing the protruding bolts from the sidewalk at 227 Fell Street, now Vbkirk Flowers And Events. Here’s my story: My mom tumbled, building owner bumbled, 311 fumbled, new storekeeper stumbled, you mumbled, mechanics jumbled, drills rumbled, bolts crumbled, HVNA board member humbled.
– Henry Ostendorf

HVNA Board member Henry Ostendorf submitted the above to recognize the actions of a good neighbor: Chris’s Discount Mufflers at 220 Fell St. (near Franklin). As noted, Chris came to the aid of people in the neighborhood by resolving a safety issue. Chris has been a neighborhood merchant for over 20 years, although his shop’s lease is up March 2012 when SF JAZZ hopes to begin building their new home at that location. He is hopeful he will be able to find another location in the neighborhood.

Public Safety Update
by Bob Barnwell
The Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association’s Public Safety Committee is now meeting at the Korean American Center at 745 Buchanan, on the first Monday of each month at 7:00 pm. We will not be meeting in December, but will meet again on January 4, 2010.

In the last six months we have had numerous City and State departments at the meetings including Juvenile Probation, Adult Probation, State Parole Department, the Housing Authority, the District Attorney’s Office, the Public Defenders’ Office, the City Attorney’s Office, Northern Police Station, the SF Unified School District, as well as managers from the many housing developments in our area.
We have a new police captain at Northern Station. On November 14th, Captain Casciato was replaced by Captain Ann Mannix. We appreciate the efforts Captain Casciato has made for our community and look forward to working with Captain Mannix.

Tending Patricia’s Green Via Park Scan?
Our City’s Recreation and Parks Department was unable to schedule any park workdays for volunteer gardeners for the remainder of the year. Many neighbors do hope to have more park support from the City next year. Contact us at green@hayesvalleysf.org to let us know your interest in helping with upcoming gardening activities. Until then, please help tend your park via ParkScan at www.parkscan.org, a project of the Neighborhoods Park Council.

We’ve listed a number of maintenance issues with images and hope that park lovers will add comments and report issues of concern. Park Scan allows us to publicly keep track of when and how the City responds. More comments could mean more action.

Might Park Scan be the place to begin a health and safety discussion for a “people only” zone on the grass?

Songs Without Words, an antique piano showroom, opens in Hayes Valley in December taking over the former Linc Art Gallery storefront at Rose and Market. The store offers the finest European pianos in completely restored condition. The store will host recitals and is available for intimate private parties with catering and music. Songs Without Words is also excited to sponsor Hayes Valley’s musical and art community with pianos, musicians and video art. Their video projection art and old world furnishings combine to create a truly unique experience in their showroom. The Grand opening is December 18th, 1632 C Market Street. www.fine-european-pianos.com
