Karen Mauney-Brodek, President
president@hayesvalleysf.org
Background: Karen has been involved with HVNA for several years, serving as Vice-President 2009, Corresponding Secretary 2008, Associate Board member 2007 and has been an active member of the Transportation and Planning committee. Karen holds a Masters in Architecture as well as a Masters in City and Regional Planning with an emphasis on urban design, and works for San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department.

Bill Bulkley, Vice President
Background: Bill is a California registered landscape architect who works for San Francisco Department of Public works. He has served a term on the Board as Treasurer, and has also been a member at large. Bill chairs the Arts, Culture and Environment (ACE) committee, and is actively involved in the Transportation and Planning committee. Outside of HVNA, Bill volunteers with the Friends of the Urban Forrest and City/Space, a non-profit organization examining urbanism through art.

Richard Johnson, Treasurer
Background: Richard has served HVNA as President, Membership Secretary and as an At-large member, and chairs our Children and Families committee. Richard is also co-Founder of Community Partners United, with which HVNA works closely in a collaboration of organizations and city agencies throughout Hayes Valley, Lower Haight and the Western Addition.

Jay Rosenberg, Recording Secretary
Background: Jay is the Volunteer Coordinator with San Francisco Permaculture Guild and he is the Project Advisor for the Hayes Valley Farm project on Oak and Laguna.

Background: Jason also served as Corresponding Secretary 2009, Vice-President 2008, Corresponding Secretary 2006-7, Recording Secretary 2005; and was an at-large member of the Board in 2004. He also chairs the Transportation & Planning committee. Jason is assistant professor of Geography at San Francisco State University.

Bob Barnwell, Membership

Background: It only took one month for Bob to join Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association after moving here 3 years ago. He grew up in the East Bay but spent the last 20 years in Southern California. Many people know him as Bicycle Bob, who rarely misses a meeting or function. Bob is Chair of the Public Safety Committee and was an associate Board member. He has a successful background in membership for community groups in Los Angeles and is now involved with numerous community groups in Hayes Valley and the Western Addition.

Background: Aaron is a long-time involved member of the community, and is co-owner, with his brother, of Suppenkuche restaurant at Hayes and Laguna.

Member at Large Nathan Lozier
Nathan is a California registered landscape architect with the office of Royston Hanamoto Alley & Abey. His work focuses on the planning and design of public parks, streets, plazas, and college campuses in San Francisco and the Bay Area, with a particular emphasis on issues of sustainability and community involvement. Within HVNA, Nathan has been involved with the ACE (Arts, Culture, and Environment) Committee.

Member-at-Large: Henry Ostendorf
Henry is a Certified Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor and works for the CA Dept. of Rehabilitation. Moving to Hayes Valley a year ago, he’s coordinated the bimonthly Gardening Days in Patricia’s Green. More recently he adopted a four block area for Graffiti Watch with the Dept. of Public Works. Both in his employment, and his work in our neighborhood, he creates opportunities for others to engage in meaningful work activity and community ownership. In an earlier life he studied architecture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn NY.

Member-at-Large: Murrey Nelson
Murrey is a former New Yorker who fell in love with San Francisco and Hayes Valley upon moving here 9 years ago. After many years in the fashion industry, she made a transition to the non-profit sector 4 years ago, and is currently the Director of Development at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She is an avid supporter of the arts and serves on the board of Z Space Studio.

Member-at-Large: Kassim Visram
Kassim has been involved with HVNA ever since he moved to the neighborhood in January, 2000. He is a member of the Communications Committee, and maintains the HVNA website. When not resizing, up-loading or archiving files for HVNA, Kassim works for PG&E as a Geographic Information Systems Analyst.

Edward has been a resident of Hayes Valley for six years, and is a graphic artist and web editor.

Associate Member: Tom Peacock
Tom is the manager of La Boulange de Hayes, and has been very helpful to our organization, and others, with donations of food for meetings and other volunteer activities.

A long-time resident in the area, Vlad is an active member of the Transportation and Planning committee and is a student in Architecture.

Northern District Police/Community Relations Forums
We meet twice monthly to address police and safety issues in the Northern District which includes all of the H.V.N.A. boundaries. Each meeting covers community topics and attendees receive a report from the Captain on the prior month's criminal activities. These meetings are located at Northern Station, 1125 Fillmore (corner of Turk) in the Community Room.
