Karen Mauney-Brodek, President
president@hayesvalleysf.org
Karen has been involved with HVNA for several years, serving as Vice-President 2009, Corresponding Secretary 2008, Associate Board member 2007 and has been an active member of the Transportation and Planning committee. Karen holds a Masters in Architecture as well as a Masters in City and Regional Planning with an emphasis on urban design, and works for San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department.

Murrey Nelson, Vice President

Murrey is a former New Yorker who fell in love with San Francisco and Hayes Valley upon moving here 12 years ago. After many years in the fashion industry, she made a transition to the non-profit sector 4 years ago, and is currently the Director of Development at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She is an avid supporter of the arts and serves on the board of Z Space Studio. Murrey also chairs HVNA's Communications Committee.

Richard Johnson, Treasurer
Richard has served HVNA as President, Membership Secretary and as an At-large member, and chairs our Children and Families committee. Richard is also co-Founder of Community Partners United, with which HVNA works closely in a collaboration of organizations and city agencies throughout Hayes Valley, Lower Haight and the Western Addition.

Jay Rosenberg, Recording Secretary
Jay is the Volunteer Coordinator with San Francisco Permaculture Guild and he is the Project Advisor for the Hayes Valley Farm project on Oak and Laguna.

Jason also served as Corresponding Secretary 2009, Vice-President 2008, Corresponding Secretary 2006-7, Recording Secretary 2005; and was an at-large member of the Board in 2004. He also chairs the Transportation & Planning committee. Jason is assistant professor of Geography at San Francisco State University.

Bob Barnwell, Membership

Bob has been active in the Hayes Valley community for over 4 ½ years. The first group Bob joined was the Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association. For the last two years Bob has been chairman of the Public Safety Committee. Our monthly Public Safety meetings have discussed numerous topics and attracted many members of the city family. Bob is also the Membership Secretary for HVNA and has a successful background in membership for community groups in the 20 years he spent in the Los Angeles area. During Bob's tenure HVNA has had a membership increase in and we now have over 55 business members, a dynamic community that leads to working together among businesses and residents. Bob is involved with numerous community groups in the Hayes Valley and Western Addition and Bob looks forward to continuing to work with the wonderful leaders and people of our area.

Member-at-Large: Bill Bulkley
Bill is a California registered landscape architect who works for San Francisco Department of Public works. He has served a term on the Board as Treasurer, and has also been a member at large. Bill chairs the Arts, Culture and Environment (ACE) committee, and is actively involved in the Transportation and Planning committee. Outside of HVNA, Bill volunteers with the Friends of the Urban Forrest and City/Space, a non-profit organization examining urbanism through art.

Member-at-Large: Aaron Hulme
Background: Aaron is a long-time involved member of the community, and is co-owner, with his brother, of Suppenkuche restaurant at Hayes and Laguna.

Member-at-Large: Nathan Lozier
Nathan is a California registered landscape architect with the office of Royston Hanamoto Alley & Abey. His work focuses on the planning and design of public parks, streets, plazas, and college campuses in San Francisco and the Bay Area, with a particular emphasis on issues of sustainability and community involvement. Within HVNA, Nathan has been involved with the ACE (Arts, Culture, and Environment) Committee.


 

Member-at-Large: Henry Ostendorf
Henry is a Certified Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor and works for the CA Dept. of Rehabilitation. Moved to Hayes Valley three years ago he is an original member of Project Homeless Connect Community Garden, a occasional volunteer at Hayes Valley Farm, and coordinator of Friends of Patricia's Green that works to improve the park conditions with advocacy and scheduled volunteer workdays. Henry is a member of the HVNA newsletter committee and has been producing the alternate month newsletter flyer for HVNA.

Member-at-Large: Kassim Visram
Kassim has been involved with HVNA ever since he moved to the neighborhood in January, 2000. He is a member of the Communications Committee, and maintains the HVNA website. When not resizing, up-loading or archiving files for HVNA, Kassim works for PG&E as a Geographic Information Systems Analyst.

Associate Member: Jessie Allen-Young
Jessie moved to Hayes Valley in 2007. Trained with a liberal arts education and a Masters Degree in Architecture, she appreciates Hayes Valley's central location and vibrant community. She became involved in HVNA in 2009 and serves as the Hayes Valley Voice editor and solicits articles. Working as an architect with a strong interest in urban planning, public transportation and city government, she bikes to and from work in Sausalito most days.

Associate Member: Larry Cronander
Larry is a fourth-generation San Franciscan whose family came to SF for the Gold Rush in 1852. One side of the family lived in Hayes Valley 1887 – 1957. Larry grew up in the Parkside and, aside from being away at University for three years, has lived in San Francisco ("I have never found anywhere else I wanted to live!"). Larry attended Lowell High School, UC Berkeley and Cambridge University. Larry has lived in Hayes Valley since 2004 and has been a member of HVNA for two years. Larry has worked for McRoskey Mattress Company for thirteen years, four in his current position as Manager. Larry is responsible for McRoskey's participation in HVNA and the HV Merchants Association. Prior to that, Larry worked in banking and law. Larry has a strong interest in the neighborhood, both historically and its recent and ongoing renaissance, due in no small measure to the efforts of the HVNA. Larry is a member, SF Mint and Historical Society, among other organizations and believes in strengthening community participation.

 

Associate Member: Lauren Daley
While earning her Master's in Architecture at Berkeley, Lauren developed an interest in community based design, healthy cities, urban agriculture, natural building techniques and sustainability. Lauren moved to Hayes Valley in 2009 and became active in the HVNA that same year. With a background in affordable housing, she advocates for socially equitable neighborhoods. She practices architecture and is active with the Transportation and Planning Committee and the Communications Committee.

Associate Member: Jamie Lopez
Jamie was born and raised in the SF Bay Area and has lived and worked in Hayes Valley for 18 years. She has previously served three terms as officer on the HVNA Board and was NERT Coordinator for Hayes Valley from 2004 – 2009. Jamie works free-lance as a database and design consultant and with non-profit organizations developing federal legislation, state legislation and rehabilitation programs for disabled military veterans. Jamie is also on the Working Committee of the San Francisco Veterans Memorial Project, slated to be built between the SF Opera and Veterans' Buildings in 2012 - 2013.

Associate Member: Vladimir Vlad
A long-time resident in the area, Vlad is an active member of the Transportation and Planning committee and is a student in Architecture.

The Communications committee is charged with managing HVNA's website, publishing our newsletter, The Hayes Valley Voice as well as planning several events designed to familiarize residents with the neighborhood and welcome new resdients to the area. The communications committee is always looking to expand their efforts and welcomes your help.

Public Safety

Our main focus is to come up with both short and long term solutions to crime and quality of life issues that affect our neighborhood. The true solution to solving ongoing crime issues is to get all the parties involved in a problem to come up with a solution. If this description fits you, please join us at our regular meetings.

Transportation and Planning

Positioned in a very important district of San Francisco both for its location and diversity, HVNA looks to the Planning & Transportation committee to tackle issues of traffic calming, pedestrian crosswalks and more.

Northern District Police/Community Relations Forums

We meet twice monthly to address police and safety issues in the Northern District which includes all of the H.V.N.A. boundaries. Each meeting covers community topics and attendees receive a report from the Captain on the prior month's criminal activities. These meetings are located at Northern Station, 1125 Fillmore (corner of Turk) in the Community Room.
