WHY: Five years of community-drive effort have transformed the Western Addition’s five-block-long public park, Buchanan Mall, from a dilapidated concourse marked by turf conflicts and shootings into an open-air community center for gathering, play, exercise, and joyful social connection. The Western Addition Peace Festival, now in its third consecutive year on the Mall, is a signature event of the community’s reclamation work.
The Peace Festival is organized by founder and community activist Terry Taylor and Citizen Film, a nonprofit production company based in the Western Addition.
