HVNA Seeks to Block a Chain Store in Hayes Valley

The Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association has filed its legal brief with the San Francisco Board of Appeals to overturn the Planning Department Zoning Administrator’s decision to allow Kit and Ace clothing store to open in Hayes Valley (371 Hayes Street). Hayes Valley is one of three commercial districts that bans formula retail (chain stores) in San Francisco.  HVNA’s main point is Kit and Ace did not fully disclose its intention to be a formula retailer, and has provided this evidence to the Board of Appeals. The company, with financial backing from the founder of Lululemon, Chip Wilson, has always had plans to open over 50 stores in 2015 worldwide, but strategically applied for permits in Hayes Valley when it had only 9, below the minimum 11 stores that help define a formula retailer.
