Below is a list of great summer opportunities for youth in our community. Almost all programs are for youth ages 14-17 or 14-18. There is one program for middle school aged youth: the Urban Trailblazers at the Crissy Field Center.

ARTS
Program: Summer 2011 paid internship opportunities
Application deadline: April 4
Description: Three areas: Architecture/public art; web design/digital filmmaking; teaching assistant to rising ninth-graders.
Sponsor: Out of Site Youth Arts Center
Who may apply: San Francisco public high school students ages 14-18
Dates: June 20-July 15, Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Other details: Teaching assistant must have experience in printmaking, percussion, photography or acting

Program: Spotlight on the Arts
Application deadline: April 15
Description: Provides deserving teens who are interested in the arts with paid summer internships, workshops on conflict resolution, college preparation and career development, behind-the-scenes tours of arts facilities, and field trips to live cultural events.

Program: Powerhouse Youth Arts Program
Application deadline: Not specified
Sponsor: Geneva Car Barn & Powerhouse
Description: A stipended arts program for San Francisco students aged 14-17. PYAP’s goal is to cultivate youth development and career exposure through community-relevant arts projects, field trips and professional development.
Who may apply: Must be a San Francisco student 14-17 years old. SF District 11 youth, youth of color, working-class, immigrant and queer youth are encouraged to apply.
Dates: Summer session July 5-Aug. 5, Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (Fall session to be announced)
Other details: The program includes classes in Digital Media Arts, Culinary Arts, Fabrication/Design Arts, and Literary Arts.

Program: Powerhouse Community Arts Educator Internships

Description: Paid internship positions for emerging youth leaders.

Other details: Interns receive training in community-building, leadership, and critical thinking, and serve as peer educators and teaching assistants in Powerhouse Youth Arts Project classes.

ENVIRONMENT/OUTDOORS
Program: LINC summer program (Linking Individuals to the Natural Community)
Application deadline: April 8
Description: Students work outdoors on service projects in Bay Area parklands, and participate in field trips and leadership workshops in this six-week program. Students receive a $1,000 educational award upon satisfactory completion of the program.
Sponsor: Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy
Who may apply: Students ages 15-18. No experience necessary
Dates: June 22-July 29
Other details: Program begins with a four-day Yosemite camping adventure, with all equipment, food and transportation provided. Participants must be in good health and able to hike several miles, as this program involves extensive physical activity. The group of no more than 18 individuals will meet each morning at the Fort Mason field office. Students will work 28 hours per week from Tuesday–Friday. Each morning the team will meet at 9 a.m., travel by bus to different project sites, then return to the field office around 4 pm (with some exceptions).

Program: Restoration Youth Crew
Application deadline: April 8.
Description: Students work outdoors on service projects in Bay Area parklands, and participate in field trips and leadership workshops in this eight-week program. Students receive an $850 educational award and academic credit upon satisfactory completion of the program.

Who may apply: Students ages 15–18 who have an interest in the environment and some experience working outside.
Dates: July 5-Aug. 5
Other details: Program begins with a three-day backpacking trip, with all equipment, food and transportation provided. The team will consist of approximately 10 individuals who will meet each morning at the Presidio field office. Students will work 28 hours per week from Tuesday–Friday. Each morning the team will meet at 9 a.m., travel by van to different project sites, then return to the field office around 4 pm (with some exceptions).

Program: Urban Trailblazers (for middle-school students)
Application deadline: One day only, Saturday, April 30 – must apply in person and bring competed application.
Description: Six-week environmental youth leadership program introduces 24 middle school students from San Francisco-area public schools to the outdoors through restoration projects, environmental workshops and exploration of the Golden Gate National Parks. Participants earn a $225 award for full participation in the program.

Who may apply: Public middle school students
Dates: June 21-29
Other details: The program builds on many outdoor experiences, including a three-day, two-night camping trip, an overnight on Alcatraz, and sea kayaking in the San Francisco Bay . Youth experience the mysteries of nature firsthand and learn useful team-building and outdoor skills. Families, friends and community members are invited to a culminating celebration that showcases the participants’ achievements and experiences.

LIFE SKILLS
Program: RISE Life Skills Program
Application deadline: To be announced. (Information currently on website, showing a past application deadline, is for the spring 2011 session, not summer.)
Description: A safe forum to talk about and get information on the physical, emotional, and mental health needs of young women. Participants earn $300 for successful completion of the program.
Sponsor: Oasis for Girls
Who may apply: Young women ages 14-17

Other details: Skill building workshops include: anti-oppression, self-esteem, body image, stress management, healthy relationships, safer sex, educational options, career planning, mental health, nutrition, sexual harassment, self-defense, and more.

Program: Technology and Leadership Program

Description: Prepares participants for advanced education and job training. Teaches young women technology skills, job readiness, and leadership skills. Participants earn $500 for successful completion of the program.
